Chance the Rapper has been relatively quiet since the release of his first studio album, The Big Day, which was met with unfavorable reviews. He's been doing a few features since with loose singles in between. For his first single of 2022, he has come out with Child of God. The song was made in collaboration with visual artist Naïla Opiangah for an exhibit in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
The single feels like a bit of a return to form for Chance. The instrumental is low-key, giving way for Chance's verses to take the center stage. He comes through with a quieter and more reflective delivery. The chorus repeats "Do your thing child," which seems to be the greater message of the song. It acts as a motivation for Chance to get up and keep at what he's doing.
Each of the verses is filled with punctual and thoughtful lyrics from Chance. He addresses hardships and struggles to just keep moving forward. His subdued tone fits the heavy subject matter with a sense of matured awareness. Moses Sumney makes an appearance at the end of the track to add his vocal talents to the outro.
Chance's introspective approach to the track may give us some insight to where he will be coming from on his next project. It strips away some of the glamour from his previous albums to a more personal place for him. No matter what criticism he may have received for his last project, Chance is a truly talented musician who has given us some fantastic records in the past. This song is a welcome and appreciated return for the rapper. Be sure to check out the video above or listen below!
